Faith Without Seeing
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. -- John 3:16 NIV
A fundamental question about Christianity has often been asked. Why doesn’t God just show Himself to us? Why must we believe without seeing Him in order to go to Heaven?
It would be difficult to address this question without first understanding that God created us. “So God created man in his own image” Genesis 1:27 (NKJV). His desire was to increase His family with those on earth who would truly love Him.
We learn in Genesis (chapters 2 and 3) that He did have a personal relationship with the first people He created, Adam and Eve; and He spoke with them. But they betrayed Him and were consequently separated from God. They could no longer physically hear His voice.
God came to us again, physically, in the form of a man, Jesus Christ. He did show Himself to us. We did indeed see Him. But, we ultimately crucified Him.
Thankfully, our Lord did not give up on us. He sent us His Holy Spirit so that whoever believes would have eternal life with Him. We cannot physically see Him now, but in time, we will.
Since the beginning of time, our Lord has shown Himself to us. He continues to speak to us and reveal Himself to us through His word (the Bible), prayer, other believers, and all of creation. It is up to each of us to accept Him and join His family. Pray that others will see God through your words and actions.
